They are most colorful while breeding. Females are tan and white with two dark, horizontal stripes, one from the nose through the tail and the other running from the nose along the bottom of the dorsal fin. The stomach of the female turns bright violet-red, and her face may have a yellow tint. The male is longer and more slender, but has similar coloration with the same horizontal stripes. He may have a faint violet area on his belly as well. Kribensis can be found in a variety of color variants and may have regional color differences depending on where they are collected.
